Things to Come

Earlier today, I read this rather insightful post by Matt @ The Church of No People, and it got me thinking about what the next ten years might look like. Now, as far as decades go, I’ve got 2.5 of them under my belt, and at the beginning of this decade, my greatest worry was trying balance working my part-time job and studying for my 4th Period Physics test. Since that time, I’ve graduated both high school and college, gotten married (to this incredibly good looking lady right here), had a kid, moved 12.5 times (I know, it’s pretty ridiculous), gotten ordained, bought 3 cars (only one of which cost more than $1,000), survived as a family of 3 on a single (and fairly not large) income for a few years, been lied to & learned some valuable lessons (I consider these last two things to be the same thing), and took my kid to Disney World.

Hopefully it’s pretty obvious that my list is hardly exhaustive. It’s more of a snapshot than anything else. But the more I think of it, it dawns on me that the last ten years comprises almost 40% of my life, and what a 40% it’s been, which brings us to the next ten years.

Here are my predictions for myself, the Boldman family, and the world in general for the next ten years. Obviously I have no real insight into the particulars of world events in the coming years, so it may not be a good idea to make any drastic life decisions based on the words that follow:

The Best Weekend I’ve Had In A Long Time

In the past few days, I experienced four things that I hope I never forget:

Being Ridiculously Proud of My Wife
On Monday, my wife picked up a piece of paper that tells the whole world something that I already knew: That my wife is the smartest person that I know. I am so proud of my beautiful bride. She has officially completed all of the coursework and internship requirements for her Master’s Degree from Stetson University. How unbelievably cool is that?

Seeing Students Step Up In a BIG way:
On Friday, the students of the Attic Student Ministries at White Chapel Church of God showed their maturity and focus in a huge way by helping sort and count thousands of toys and bicycles for our Toy and Bike Giveaway that was held on Saturday. And what makes this even more remarkable? It’s the fact that these students actually had a half-day of school on Friday and chose to spend their afternoon serving rather than playing Nintendo (I know, I know. I’m old). These students are incredible.

Realizing the Needs of Our Community
Starting as early as 8:30pm on Friday, members of our community started lining up outside our doors for a Toy and Bike Giveaway that wouldn’t start for another 12 hours. Now, I’m no stranger to need, but it always hits home when I see people willing to sacrifice and endure unfavorable (to say the least) conditions just to see their children have a happy Christmas. Although it was (and always will be) our goal to find ways to eradicate this type of need, I hope I never forget the look in one lady’s eyes as she was waiting to receive gifts for her six kids.

Serving Christ through Serving Others
Probably one of the coolest things that I saw this weekend was how 50+ students and volunteers came together to help the less fortunate of our community. Altogether, we gave away roughly 1,700 toys and 70 bicycles to 117 families (that included almost 400 children). I have never been more proud to say that I am a part of something. On Saturday, I was proud to be a part of the Body of Christ, and it’s because of people like the students of the Attic Student Ministries and the volunteers of White Chapel Church of God that I can say that. I am blessed to be a part of such an amazing group of people and even more blessed that those people chose to serve God through serving the community.

Thoughts on Toy Giveaways & A Down Economy

In roughly 4 days, 15 hours, 29 minutes, and 30-some-odd seconds, The Attic Student Ministry is going to be giving away a boat-load of toys to the under-privileged families of South Daytona and the surrounding communities. Overall, this is an incredible thing, but there is one thought that seems to be occupying the thoughts and hearts of the individuals and families that are involved: “But there seemed to be more toys last year.”

Ah, yes. I’ve dealt with this hope-sucking, joy-killing, cheer-squelching monster before. Too often we use the past as a measure of the future. Now, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes measuring against the past is a good thing. For example: If you ran a mile in 10 minutes last month, and you’ve been training really hard, you should be able to hope that you can now run it in 9 minutes (or even better), right? Right. That is, unless you’re now an amputee.

Dysentery. It’s Not Just For Settlers Anymore.

Don’t tell me that you’ve never been kicking along at a grueling pace with little supplies when you suddenly your hopes of fording the river are dashed by five of the most profound words in the English language. Yes, I mean these five words:

Getting a "Free" Oil Change

Do you remember when your dad (or perhaps more likely your grandfather) told you that there’s “no such things as a free lunch?” I recently discovered that this depression-era adage applies good and well in this “not a recession” economy in which we find ourselves, and furthermore, it applies to industries that having little or nothing to do with lunch or food of any kind.

Forgetting Your Wallet

Six years ago, I was about 30 minutes into a date with someone that  I (thankfully) am no longer in contact with (restraining orders are awesome… I kid, I kid), when I realized that I forgot my wallet. I then spent the next 30 minutes or so pseudo-listening to my date talk about her day, all the while channeling my inner mullet and asking myself, “WWMgD?”

Taking Lunch at Three instead of Noon

Have you ever had a day that started with a whirlwind (no, not that kind) and only gets interrupted because at 3 o’clock you looked at your watch and realized that you hadn’t taken a lunch break yet? For me, that day is today. In my own mind, I am in fact a superhero (but not a dumb one like these guys). In reality, I am an mildly-successful firm administrator for a small family law firm that happens to be busier than ever, which means that I, consequently, am also busier than ever.

Stepping In It… Literally

So let’s get a few unpleasant details out of the way right here and right now. We have a two-year-old little boy, which means that while riding in the car, it’s not unusual for my wife to look at me and say, “Do you smell that?” Yes. Of course I smell that. How could I not smell that?

Running Into Old Friends Unexpectedly

Have you ever had the experience of running into and old friend at a restaurant? For me, it happened at a Jason’s Deli (which, might I add, has an incredible Club Sandwich… just ignore the Saturated Fat). I was actually running waaaay early for a meeting (this acutally happens more often than you’d think), so I randomly stopped in for a soda. I wasn’t sitting there for five minutes before two of my favorite people that I hadn’t seen in almost five years (although, it’s hard to justify calling them my favorite people if I haven’t made the effort to see them) walked in the front door of the restaurant.
