Church is Boring…

Ok, so here’s the deal, I spent the majority of my morning in Altamonte Springs (about 10 miles or so from our church) looking with no avail for a certain book that I’ve been meaning to read, so after scouring virtually the entire city (actually, I only looked in one store), I went to the Altamonte Mall, hoping that the Barnes and Noble Bookstore would have it, and wouldn’t you know it? They did. There was much rejoicing.

However, since I had already wasted a good portion of my day, I figured that I had a pretty good thing going, so I decided to take it even one step further…

Ok, so first I went to the T-Shirt guy where I have all my custom shirts made, and wouldn’t you know, but he had made a new sign for his store, and it had sample T-Shirt designs on it, and 3 of my designs made it on the sign. How cool is that?? I took pictures with my phone, but they turned out really badly. Oh well, here they are anyways:

Yep, I guess I’m pretty cool. (Oh and by they way, my (soon to be) wife really is pretty hot.

Anyways, so back to the story…

I noticed that there were tons of college aged people at the mall, so I decided to start talking to them, as my new job at Crossings is to be the “Young Adults Pastor” or something like that, as we haven’t figured out a real title yet. I decided that I only had 2 simple questions:

“Do you go to church?” and “Why or why not?” Nothing more, nothing less. I wasn’t trying to trap them, and I definitely wasn’t trying to get them to come to our church. I simply wanted answers. So here’s what I learned:

Of the 40 people that I spoke with…
* 8 went to church regularly
* 32 do not attend church regularly

Of the 32 that do not attend church regularly…
* 19 said it was because church is boring
* 7 said it was because they had no interest in church
* ONLY 6 said it was because they did not believe in God
* Over half said that they would attend church if it could hold their attention

Of the 8 that do attend church regularly…
* 7 said it was because they’ve gone since they were little

Interesting? My time at the mall sure was, but apprently church is everything but interesting. Hmm…

I’ve decided to do this at least once a week for the next few weeks or even months to try and get a better handle on where these people are coming from. Hopefully I’ll be able to better tailor my questions to get some more concrete answers to help figure out some solutions. Who knows? We’ll see.
